Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyse three aspects in the results of LAF(Laminar Air Flow) room Environmental culture tests in the Stem Cell Transplantation unit. Using environmental culture tests, we examined the presence of bacteria, bacteria detection in the relation to time, and bacteria detection in the relation to with/without the presence of a care-giver in LAF room.
For this study, we analysed the data-the result of 114 cases of LAF room test-that were operated from August, 1998 to February, 2002.
In data collection, 114 admitted patients (88 in Hemato-oncology, 26 in pediatrics) volunteered to participate, and collected the results from 684 cases of air culture tests and 1710 cases of swab culture tests. Participants' age varied from 2 to 56 years old.
For each patient, the LAF room date was operated three times after admission, transplanting date, and on the fifth day after the transplantation. The places for the air culture examination were taken at 'two places', one was 'under the bed', and the other was 'in the vicinity of the bed'. The five places for swab culture were 'the bathtub', 'the floor', the sink', 'access curtain', and 'access gloves'.
The bacteria detection in air culture test was 48 of total 684 cases of 7.0%. In the relation to time, total of 25 cases (6 cases of 'under the bed', 7 cases on 'the transplanting day', and 12 cases on the fifth day after transplanting) were not significant(r=.041, p=.778). In the vicinity of the bed, total of 23 cases (9 cases on the admission day, 7 cases on the fifth day after transplanting) didn't have significance in the results(r=.041, p=.419).
The five kinds of bacteria like Staphylococcus spp, Aspergillus, Enterococcus, E. coli, Bacilli were detected in swab culture and among them, Staphylococcus spp was detected the most with 19 cases of 1.1%.
After observing the result of analysis in the relation between the bacteria detection and with/without the presence of care-giver in LAF room, 13 cases with presence of guardian and 44 cases without the presence of the care-giver were not statistically significant.
